Q. Why do I need an initial assessment?
When we first meet, I need to conduct a comprehensive medical/health intake, perform specific holistic health and functional movement assessments, perform a postural evaluation, and, if needed, review the results of any diagnostic tests, physician orders or recent blood work. I will ask questions about your symptoms (if any), lifestyle, and diet. I will assess any contraindications or restrictions to providing treatment. I will address your health concerns, explain each therapy and answer any questions you may have. The 90 minute initial assessment/consultation helps me evaluate your needs in order to create a safe, high quality, therapeutic treatment plan to benefit you holistically.
The initial consultation is also the perfect opportunity for you to assess me as your therapist/practitioner. What is my experience? Do my skills meet with your expectations or goals? Do you feel comfortable having treatments with me as your practitioner?
Q. Can I come in just for a consultation (without a treatment)?
New clients seeking services as part of an integrative healthcare plan for a specific health concern often consult with various practitioners prior to scheduling an actual treatment. I am pleased to offer this service for prospective clients.
Many first-time clients seeking Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapy for lymphedema or pre/post op treatments schedule a 60 minute consultation for the first visit to discuss therapy needs and a treatment plan. This will be determined when we speak on the phone to schedule your appointment. You will need to have physician clearance before starting treatment. Please bring the doctor's note or the expected, recommended treatment protocol with you to your appointment.
In all cases, the client consultation lasts 45-60 minutes and the charge is $50. If the client schedules future sessions, the $50 consultation fee will be applied to the cost of the next session.
Q. After the initial session, how long and of what type are the sessions?
Clients do not pay per service or therapy but rather based on the block of time that is reserved. You may choose to have more than one therapy treatment in a session (example: Reflexology and Healing Touch, or Massage and Reflexology). Typically a 30 minute session only accommodates one therapy, whereas a 60 minute session can include two treatments. A 90 minute session always provides the client the best opportunity to incorporate multiple therapies.
Unlike many facilities where a 60 minute appointment generally means you receive 50 minutes of table time and 5 minutes before and after your treatment for consultation with your therapist, at Intrinsic Health Source your scheduled time is all table time! I allow enough time before and after your treatment for brief consultation without taking away from your treatment time. You are never rushed due to back-to-back booking of appointments.
Q. Do I have to undress for the session?
NO, you do not have to get undressed for any treatment if you do not feel comfortable. Generally, if you are receiving only Reflexology or energy therapies (Reiki or Healing Touch), you will lie on the massage table fully clothed. Reflexology clients will be asked to remove their socks. If you are receiving a full-body Massage Therapy or Manual Lymphatic Drainage session, you are encouraged to disrobe to your comfort level, however you can still receive a quality massage if you prefer to keep your clothes on.
Q. What is the treatment room environment like?
The treatment room is a serene and peaceful room. There are window dressings covering the windows, the lights are low, and relaxing music is playing. You will be lying comfortably on an extra padded, heated massage table, and you will be covered with soft sheets and cozy blankets with additional pillows to support you if you require. I leave the room while you undress. Your privacy and comfort is maintained at all times.
Q. What if I don't like to be touched?
Massage Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and Reflexology require me to touch your body, however at any time that you feel uncomfortable, I will adjust my techniques to ensure my touch meets your comfort level. All energy therapies (Reiki, Healing Touch and Chakra Balancing) can be done without me directly touching you.
Q. How many treatments do I need?
The frequency of treatments will vary depending on your state of health and long-term objectives. Each treatment builds upon previous ones to increase your body's intrinsic ability to heal physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
The benefits of holistic therapies are experienced differently. Although some clients notice an improvement after just one treatment, most clients (especially those with long-standing issues) have needed a few sessions to fully experience the benefits. Often a new client is encouraged to schedule 3-4 sessions over the course of a 10-30 day period following their initial visit. Scheduling these initial sessions allows clients time to recognize any noticeable changes or positive outcomes that occur.
The goal is to reach optimum wellness - to empower YOU with the strategies and skills to live a healthy and balance life while enhancing your body's INTRINSIC ability to heal. The focus is to find relief from acute or chronic health issues that are causing pain or dysfunction. Once you reach the stage of being able to maintain this sense of balance and well-being, the recommended schedule for treatments is once or twice a month.
The decision is ultimately up to you. I never solicit appointments or pressure you into more care than what would provide a therapeutic outcome.
Q. What can I expect after my treatment?
Most people find the treatments very relaxing and sleep well following a treatment. Pain relief is often reported, usually after one session. Emotions such as depression, anger, guilt are often released. Immediately after a treatment you may feel tired, light-headed, relaxed, energize or more emotional. You might be a little sore following some deep tissue work. You might have to go to the bathroom more frequently, or have a runny nose or eyes. It is not uncommon for certain conditions to temporarily worsen for up to 48 hours as the body adjusts and begins its natural healing process. Expect the body to detoxify. To help the detoxification and healing process, drink plenty of water to flush out unwanted toxins the day of treatment and over the following few days. You may also feel the need to rest more. These are all perfectly normal reactions. This process is what we call a "healing event" or "emotional release". If you are concerned about possible side effects, please do not hesitate to contact me.
After each session, your needs are reassessed to discuss appropriate post treatment plans. This will include the scheduling of further treatments, referrals to other professionals, and instruction in self-care as needed, all in collaboration with your wishes. You will also be given some after care advice so that you can continue to maximize the benefits of your treatment. All information I share with you is within my scope of practice as a nurse, holistic therapist and massage therapist. At no time do I claim to be a primary care provider nor do I offer to cure, diagnose or prescribe medications.
Q. Do you accept insurance?
Medical insurance is not accepted. Holistic Therapies and Wellness Services are generally not covered by insurance, but you may be able to submit a claim. Health Savings Accounts or Health Flex Accounts may offer some coverage. Please check with your individual insurance carrier to explore possible wellness benefit reimbursements. Upon request, I will provide you with invoices to submit for reimbursement.
Q. What type of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, check, Master Card, Visa, Discover, AMEX as payment methods. I do not perform insurance billing. Payments can be made securely online in advance, or in the office at the time of the service. Please note there is no refund for gift certificates and session packages purchased.
Q. What about Tips/Gratuities?
It is my preference not to accept any tips/gratuities from my clients. I appreciate the gesture of tips, but I would rather that you invest that money in another treatment for yourself.
Q. What is the Appointment/Cancellation policy?
Your appointment time has been reserved specifically for you. I understand that unexpected events may cause you to be late or miss your appointment, but missing your appointment without sufficient notice prevents me from scheduling another client in your time slot. Therefore I greatly appreciate your consideration of, and cooperation with, the following policy:
-If you cancel or change your appointment 24 or more hours before your appointment time there is no charge.
-If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice you will be charged 50% of the cost of the time reserved for your scheduled appointment.
-If you fail to show up for an appointment you will be charged for the full cost of the time reserved for your appointment.
-Session charges will NOT BE REDUCED for late arrivals. You will be responsible for the full cost of the time reserved for your scheduled appointment.
